MANTACHIE, Miss. (WCBI) — There’s much to be excited about going into 2015 at Mantachie.
The Mustangs struggled to a 4-7 season a year ago but teams in 2A better watch out for what’s returning for The Tach.
“We have a lot of kids back,” head coach T.J. Seago said. “That’s the most exciting things as a coach compared to having young guys with experience.”
Mantachie is a year older and a year wiser, which is tremendous for a school that enjoyed their best season ever just two seasons ago.
This season, Mantachie will focus more on the details rather than laying the foundation for their former first year head coach.
“It’s a tremendous relief,” Seago said. “We don’t have to focus on teaching the basic stuff this year. We’re ahead of that. We can add more offensively and defensively for the kids to pick up on. They know what I expect of them and they do a good job of responding.”
Amongst those returning for second year head coach T.J. Seago are 700 yard rusher Logan Pettigo, leading receiver Trey Hughes and two quarterbacks with game experience.
Those pieces help the belief that Mantachie can do something special this upcoming season, but Seago is focused on the old coach’s mentality.
“One game at a time and it’s hard to do that and not look ahead,” Seago said. “But our expectations are to compete and give ourselves a chance to win every game. I know that’s not what people want to hear but our goal is to win the first game of the season.”
Mantachie will start the season at home versus Tishomingo County before visiting Belmont and South Pontotoc in successive weeks.
