COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Cooking in the South is more than making a meal. It’s a traditional family gathering and sharing of recipes. Now, the MUW Culinary Institute is helping kids learn the basics to share in this Southern pastime.
WCBI’s Britney Blanchard tells us what they’ve got cooking in the kitchen.
“I really do like cooking, and I cook a lot at home, and I want to pass down the tradition from my mom and dad.”
Cooking is a tradition in the South, from passing down Grandma’s peach cobbler recipe to celebrating a birthday preparing a meal brings people together.
“I have a huge passion for cooking. it is something i have always been very interested in and if i can in any way whatsoever translate that to these children. I think that would be a personal victory.”
By sharing their passion, students are learning the basics of preparing a meal.
However, the course goes beyond how to properly dice a tomato. It’s building the foundation for a healthy lifestyle.
“Healthy cooking is something that not everyone is familiar with and if we can introduce these kids to this as an early age then we wont be having as many health problems as we do in our everyday society.”
Caleb Jenkins came to camp ready to share his healthier take on dessert and how to take oranges to a new level.
“You cut it in half or into triangles and then you pour sugar, coat it with sugar and blow torch it till it has a brown coating.”
Now, he’ll take that trick to stir up a good meal and serve up a good time for his family. In Columbus, Britney Blanchard, WCBI News.
The cooking camp runs through the end of June with a new session starting each week.
