LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Lowndes County investigators say what they believe to be a human bone was found in the Steens community on Thursday.
Deputies, along with Vernon and Lamar County, Alabama investigators, spent most of the day on the property that sits just about a mile from the state line. Teams spread out across timberland that had been cleared recently starting in February. The property covers at least six acres.
A cadaver dog from GTR Canine Search helped cover the area but no clothing or other bones were recovered.
Lowndes County Sheriff’s Det. Capt. Ryan Rickert said the bone was at a home on Fernbank Road when deputies arrived between 8:30 and 9 a.m.
He would not confirm how the bone was brought to the home. Although, the bone was damaged as if animals might have been chewing on it.
Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant says the apparent human bone has been taken to the Mississippi Crime Lab where the bone will undergo DNA testing.
Rickert says the testing will be compared to DNA from at least two high profile disappearance cases; that of Kaila Morris in Lowndes County and Keisha Turner from Vernon, Alabama. Turner has been missing since February and Morris for five years.
Merchant says the race, gender, and age has not been determined, or if it is in fact human bone.
It will be at least next week before testing can determine more details about the possible sex or gender of the bone and to match it against DNA from other cases.
Rickert says investigators will decide about widening the search area and other possibilities after getting more information from the lab.
