Video: UPDATE – Shelton Counsel Responds To Mayfield Lawsuit

TUPELO (WCBI) – Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton is responding to a lawsuit claiming he defamed a Tupelo attorney.

Shelton was served  today with the lawsuit filed by Kenneth Mayfield . Mayfield says Shelton slandered him in a series of emails by claiming Mayfield was only seeking to profit from the unrest and tension surrounding the death of Ronnie Shumpert.    Shelton is being sued as a private citizen and not in his official role so he has hired attorney Brad Morris as his legal counsel.  Morris tells WCBI that “I have reviewed the complaint.  It is without legal merit.  We will file a motion asking the Court to dismiss the lawsuit.”

No time frame on when that motion will be filed has been set,
