COLUMBUS, Miss. – (WCBI) Yoga is all the rage in the fitness world right now, and has gained momentum in the last few years.
Yoga, however, has been around for centuries and does more that tighten and tone muscles.
Jill Williams is a self professed “yogi.” As the owner and instructor at Bliss Yoga in Columbus, she teaches students that the key to health and happiness is breathing.
“To do yoga, you have to breathe, and most of us breathe to the middle of the chest. If you breathe in through your nose, and fill the chest, belly and lungs too, then let go. In through the nose, gently warms and filters the air and as you exhale back out through the nose, it gently cools the breath and relaxes the body,” says Williams.
Yoga can help you improve your balance, mood, strength and can also aid in reducing your blood pressure.
“The last ten minutes are probably most beneficial. We lie down on our backs, and turn our palms up and relax for that ten minutes or so. It’s that time you just relax,” adds Williams.
I’ve never attended yoga class, so I started with a few basic poses.
From the tree pose, to downward facing dog, I began to feel the burn. What I thought would be easy to master turned out to be more difficult than I ever imagined.
For Jill Williams, using her knowledge to help reduce stress in the Golden Triangle is just one more day in the life.
