PONTOTOC COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A man is behind bars and charged in the deaths of a Pontotoc County couple.

Authorities arrested 26-year-old Carl Hughes Wednesday night. He’s being charged with 2 counts of capital murder in the deaths of 70-year-old Donald Ralph Baker, and his wife, 57-year-old Evelyn.

Hughes sometimes stayed in a trailer next to the couples Ecru home.

Authorities say he did know the victims but their relationship is unknown at this time.

A family member found the Baker’s dead inside their home Sunday morning.

Investigators say the two died from blunt force trauma.

In addition to the capital murder charges, Hughes is also being charged with burglary of a dwelling.

Police say the quick arrest was made because of a number of law enforcement agencies working together.

“We had other local, state and federal agencies involved to help with the arrest. And we believe Mr. Hughes acted alone and we don’t anticipate any more arrests at this time,” said Pontotoc County Sheriff Leo Mask.

“The citizens of Pontotoc County got very swift justice in the way that they conducted their thorough investigation in this matter and they made a good arrest and people were scared until we were sure that we had the killer behind bars and arrested,” said 1st District Attorney Trent Kelly.

Additional charges are possible in the case.

Hughes is being held with no bond at the Pontotoc County Jail.

Authorities say the investigation continues.
