Video: Boykin Files Request For New Attorney Because Of Possible Conflict

COLUMBUS (WCBI) -A major development tonight in the lawsuit filed by former Columbus Police officer Canyon Boykin against the city.    Boykin is filing a request to change attorneys because of a potential conflict that could be used against him in the suit.

Boykin’s attorney Jim Waide was hired back in 2014 to represent a man arrested by Boykin.  No lawsuit was ever filed by that man but now City Attorney Jeff Turnage is saying evidence in that claim could be used against Boykin in the civil suit and the city could not guarantee that Waide’s initial involvement in the claim would not come up in testimony.  The man arrested in 2014 says Boykin refused to activate his body camera even after the man asked him to and that suspect says Boykin only arrested him because he was black. That claim was settled by the city and no lawsuit was ever filed

Boykin is the Columbus officer who shot and killed Ricky Ball in October 2015.  He was fired shortly after that shooting.  Boykin is suing the city saying that firing was illegal.
