VARDAMAN, Miss. (WCBI) – This Easter Sunday some folks in Vardaman planned an Easter egg hunt, starting a new tradition of bringing people together and focusing on the youth.
Eggs, candy, and hot dogs in the park. The perfect recipe for uniting a community on Easter Sunday.
“Myself and some of the people in the community got together. We’re just doing it for the kids. There are more things we’re going to do later on but this is the beginning,” says Organizer Benny Horton.
Participants say holding events like this egg hunt will keep their children focused and involved in positive activities.
“It’s not too much to do here in Vardaman. So this Easter Egg Hunt that Benny came up with, it’s a very good idea and it’s something that we plan to continue for the kids,” Elaine Coleman, a Vardaman native.
With Horton’s leadership, these Vardaman residents are on board to help the events continue to grow. Community members hope this is the start of a tradition that will have an impact for years to come.
“I’m proud of Benny Horton. He put this all together for us and I thank him because we never do anything like this. I’m glad that he came up with it and we’re all going to help him as much as we can,” says Vardaman Resident, Vicki Armstrong.
The group is also planning a cake walk fundraiser, a talent show, basketball tournament and a yearly reunion.
The Vardaman residents hope to host a youth activity open to everyone at least once a month.
