COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Administrators say about one-third of MUW’s students are over 25 and enter college with more financial obligation, making affordability a top priority for the university. MUW is not only recognized for its strong academic programs but it’s also one of the most affordable colleges in Mississippi.
According to Smart Asset, a company that measures financial data, MUW ranks first in affordability.
“We see this as an affirmation of what we’re trying to achieve for our students, to provide a high quality education at the most affordable price we can,” says Dr. Tom Richardson, MUW’s Interim Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs.
Many of MUW’s students enter college older than the average freshman and have special circumstances that make paying tuition difficult.
“I am from Nepal and I was looking for different universities in America here. I looked at the W. It offered me a scholarship and that made it affordable so I chose the W,” says Suzam Phattarai, a freshman at MUW studying Mathematics.
“When I graduated from high school I was busy looking for scholarships and other opportunities so that I could be able to afford school. The cost of MUW was one of the main reasons why I chose to the school. The other reason is that they had a great staff and they’re always on board with helping the students,” says Jasmine Johnson, a MUW Senior Communications student.
Financial support from the university gives many students an opportunity to earn a degree and compete in the rapidly-changing job market.
“Affordability is a key for these non-traditional students as well as for many of our Mississippi students who are coming from low income backgrounds.
So this is critical for us,” says Richardson.
Richardson says MUW also graduates more students per 100 full-time equivalent students than the system average.
Smart Asset ranks Ole Miss second in the state and MSU as third when it comes to affordability.
