Video: Demolition Begins on Columbus’ Gilmer Inn
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The corner of Fourth Street North and Main in Columbus will soon look very different.
Crews have begun demolishing the Gilmer Inn.
A portion of Fourth street north is closed while the work continues.
Workers have removed asbestos from the old downtown Columbus hotel.
Concrete from the building will be crushed and used for other projects in town.
Water is being brought in to knock down any dust from the demolition work.
It will take at least two weeks for the building to be taken down.
“It’s still unknown what could come in here. I know at this point, the city will take it down to a grassy lot. When the demo crews leave you’ll be able to stand here and see a big nice, open clear lot.”
Historians believe there has been a hotel on that site in downtown Columbus since 1819.
