Video: Camp Rising Sun: Letting Kids Be Kids
LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – “And the pool and the climbing, everything!”
These campers are having the time of their lives. You’d never guess that the majority of them are fighting or have fought for their lives.
Camp Rising Sun is just like any other summer camp, with just a few additions.
“We’re just a traditional summer camp we just have medical staff on hand to administer meds and see their needs.”
You see the majority of these campers are cancer fighters and survivors. The camp is fully funded through donations and costs nothing to the campers or their families. To make it even better, the camp allows campers to bring a friend or a sibling.
Jay Bass is here with his sister Kayla; both are in remission.
His favorite part about camp: “When you wake up you have a smile like looking at you and you have lots of fun and you try different foods and different games and stuff.”
The added bonus: “You get away from your parents.”
Volunteers from the community even included the Columbus Fire Department and the Columbus Air Force Base. They all share the same sentiment.
“We just come here and enjoy seeing the kids have a lot of fun.”
“Just working with the kids, their wonderful. And getting to meet new members of the community and seeing how much they love these kids and how much they love this camp and seeing how much it means to them.”
And when asked if they’ll be back next year.
“Absolutely, you’ll find me at the arts and crafts shack every year from now on.”
