COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A community meeting focused on reducing crime was held at a Columbus park Tuesday morning.
Community members, pastors, law enforcement and local officials gathered at Sim Scott Park in a show of solidarity. The meeting was organized by the Men of Color group to let the Columbus community know that crime prevention and making the city safer is a top priority. Last Friday afternoon, four people suffered gun shot wounds while at Sim Scott Park.
Local officials are asking the entire community to get involved in improving the city. Columbus resident Laisha (Lay-ee-sha) Smith made the first step by asking for community meetings.
“So many familiar people, so many families I’ve known, it just touched my heart,” says Smith.
When asked what can be done to solve the issues, Smith responded, “Lock down the city baby. Lock down these parks, monitor these stores, parents need to monitor their kids.
Do what you’re supposed to do. We’re better together.”
The first community meeting will be held at Sim Scott Community Center on March 30th at 6pm.
