COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — A major downtown Columbus project more than three years in the making gets under way.
Malouf Construction has started under water work on the old Highway 182 bridge over the Tombigbee River. The work includes stabilization of the concrete bridge supports.
It’s the first step in a year-long project to transform the 100-year-old bridge into a pedestrian park and walkway connected to the popular Riverwalk.
City leaders hope the $2.2 million project will be another draw to downtown and open the area known as the Island to commercial and retail development.
