COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Four people are injured in an afternoon shooting in a Columbus park that has investigators scrambling for information.
The shots rang out shortly after 2 p.m. at Sim Scott Park along 20th Street North.
One victim was found shot in the backside behind the community center. Moments later, two others showed up at Baptist Golden Triangle with gunshot wounds. A fourth showed up sometime later.
Police Chief Tony Carleton says officers were told someone pulled up to the park and opened fire. He says evidence has been recovered at the scene. Officers later said it was an altercation and shots rang out. Capt. Brent Swan said it’s unclear whether the victims were on the same side or opposing side. He said investigators have not been able to talk to any of the victims as of 4:40 p.m.
As of 4:40 p.m., one of the victims was in surgery in critical condition at Baptist.
At about 3:30, officers found a handgun along the street in the area of 10th Avenue North and Railroad Street about two blocks from the scene. Witnesses told WCBI someone dropped it as they ran by.
In the minutes after the shooting, officers from the city and county r5eported several vehicle descriptions and checked several.
Carleton said officers still were trying to find witnesses in the area. He asks anyone with information to come to or call the police department.
Several schools in the city, including Heritage Academy, went on lockdown as a precaution because the gunmen were still at large in the city.
