STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – One of the men accused of killing a Mississippi State student on campus will spend the rest of his life in prison.
Mason Perry Jones agreed to the plea deal this afternoon in Oktibbeha County Circuit Court.
Judge Lee Howard accepted the agreement.
Three people were initially arrested for the March 24, 2012 shooting death of 21 year-old John Sanderson outside a MSU dorm.
Jones was originally charged with capital murder and eligible for the death penalty.
The plea deal allows him to spend the rest of his days in prison, thanks to Sanderson’s family.
“It was something the family wanted. It was something the family sought. They had the final say, they are the ones who made the call. As long as they are comfortable with it, we are comfortable with it,” said District Attorney Forrest Allgood.
Trent Crump and Duntae Harvey were also arrested and charged with capital murder in the case.
Their trials are scheduled to begin in May.
Oktibbeha County Circuit Clerk Glenn Hamilton says anyone who received a jury summons for Monday does not have to report for jury duty.
