Video: Coach Still out After Contentious Board Meeting
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -School Board members say it’s a matter of policy. A now former basketball head coach claims it’s about principle.
The fallout over basketball coach Luther Riley continues after district officials say Riley didn’t sign on the dotted line to renew his contract before the 10-day deadline.
“It’s hard when you give your heart and soul and time and energy and its not about money its about when you are promised things and you deliver–I just wanted a meeting”
Luther Riley says he just wanted to meet in person with Columbus schools superintendent Dr. Philip Hickman regarding the agreements in his contract and when that didn’t happen the fallout started
“This is my town where I decided to come and where I want to be -point blank”
At Monday’s board of trustees meeting school board member Jason Spears asked the rest of his fellow members to reconsider Riley’s contract
“Yes ma’am that is my motion”
During the discussion tensions flared between residents and the school board.
“Security? Is security here? You are not allowed to speak out here”
On a tie vote, the decision stands, and Riley’s contract remains void.
“Board members voted to uphold a decision made on the 8th. If they don’t turn in the contracts within 10 days the board has a decision not to renew that contract”
Meanwhile, city leaders showed their support, asking both parties to work things out
“We have found somebody that we can stand behind, and I think we need to hold onto this guy. We’ve got a winner in Riley”
During executive session residents weren’t afraid to voice their anger
“This coach has brought something positive to this school district that hasn’t been seen in over 50 years, and now these “blanks” want to get rid of him! Thank you!”
School leaders say champion coach or not, rules are rules. They have to plan ahead for the upcoming school year, making sure they have enough champion teachers and staff.
“I think coach Riley is a great guy. I just wish community leaders would show that same community support and willing to give incentives to teachers. They are the true champs.”
Riley says he is here in Columbus to stay and will continue to fight for his job.
WCBI has obtained a series of emails between the administration and Riley.
Riley does not discuss money or bonuses in the emails, but does say he had some concerns over his class teaching schedule.
In another email Riley indicates he planned on signing the contract.
