TUPELO, Miss (WCBI) – Jackson attorney Vicki Slater announced her run for governor Thursday.
The Democrat made a stop in Tupelo after her announcement at the State Capitol.
She said Governor Phil Bryant has not lived up to expectations.
The 58 year-old criticized Bryant and other Republicans for failing to fully fund MEAP and for not expanding Medicaid.
“Our leadership has failed us. We need better jobs, better education and better healthcare. It is unacceptable to turn away our tax dollars while other states do well in health care and Mississippians die. It is unacceptable to take money legally meant to fully fund our public schools, take it away from school children and put it in a savings account somewhere,” said Slater.
This is Slater’s first run for public office and is the first Democrat in the governor’s race.
Republican Governor Phil Bryant announced his re-election bid Wednesday. He quickly touted his record for economic growth and changes in the education system.
The qualifying deadline is February 27th.
