Struggling Mississippi hospital seeks financial turnaround

GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) — A hospital in the Mississippi Delta is losing millions of dollars a year and is trying to reverse course. The CEO of Greenwood Leflore Hospital, Jason Studley, says problems are worsened by the coronavirus pandemic. Nurses, laboratory technicians and respiratory therapists are being hired by out-of-state hospitals for short-term contract work at higher salaries. Hospital officials have been holding private meetings with local elected officials. They say they could publicly release details about their financial plan soon — but they wanted to tell hospital employees first. Studley says no layoffs or terminations are anticipated, but some jobs might not be filled as employees leave.
