Video: MHP and MDOT Prepare for Icy Road Conditions

UNION COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Rainy weather is on its way to North Mississippi and that could mean icy roads and dangerous driving conditions for motorists. The Mississippi Highway Patrol will be monitoring the roads around the clock.

“We’ve committed every trooper in Troop F to being on stand by. As time goes on, we’re continuing to watch the weather and those Troopers will be deployed as needed,” says Trooper Ray Hall, with New Albany-based Troop F of the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

With temperatures expected to reach freezing levels, MDOT is also ready to spread salt on icy roads. Trooper Hall says in these conditions, drivers should slow down.

“Make sure in the morning, if it’s necessary that you have to be on the road, that you reduce your speeds,” says Hall.

Commuters should allow extra time for their drive each morning and limit travel (if possible) during hazardous conditions. Hall says if drivers find themselves in a slippery situation, there are a few things they should remember:

“Just let your foot off the accelerator. Don’t slam on the brake. If you do find yourself in a hydroplane, turn your steering wheel the opposite way that the car is in the hydroplane and then just wait for until the vehicle comes to a stop,” says Hall.

If you are involved in an accident, call 911 or Highway Patrol for assistance and remain in your vehicle, if it’s safe.

Last year MHP responded to over 50 calls, in one morning, for assistance on icy roads.
