MABEN, Miss. (WCBI Sports) – There’s a sign in the East Webster locker room that says “the goal never changes.” Underneath it is a photo of the softball team hoisting the 2013 fast-pitch state championship trophy. Not only has the goal not changed for the Wolverines, the results haven’t changed much either.
East Webster is chasing its fourth-straight fast-pitch state title this week. The three seniors, Bailie Springfield, Kerrigan Clark and Madison Flemings have won four total softball titles, winning the school’s first-ever slow-pitch championship as well.
“It’s not a given that we’re going to be where we’re at,” fourth-year head coach Lee Berryhill said in regards to playing in this year’s 2A state title series. “You have to earn it, but they expect to be there.”
The Wolverines say this team has its own identity this year.
“I think we’re focused,” Springfield said. “I think we’ve had to come closer as a team and pull together more this year than any other year.”
And this year has been a success. The Wolverines are undefeated this season, going unblemished even after junior Jessica Aron suffered an injury that put her out for the season. She was hitting over .500 through the midway point of the year.
“A lot of people counted us out just because we had lost four seniors and they really didn’t think we’d make it this far,” Clark said. “I felt that we proved them wrong.”
East Webster has one more chance to prove them wrong starting Thursday in Ridgeland.
“What we’ve gone through has made us stronger,” Flemings said.
The Wolverines said it’s hard to have the right perspective when thinking about what they’re achieving.
“As a team we don’t look back at the last three years, or even last year,” Berryhill said. “They are their own team now.”
It’s a team on the brink of history.
“It would mean the world to me,” Springfield said. “Going four times, to win four state championships in a row.”
The best-of-three series with Taylorsville, the South Half winner, starts Thursday. Game one is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
