Video: Education Budget Cuts Impacting Local Districts
ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) -The Mississippi Adequate Education program funds will be cut by a $9.6 million dollars for May and June.
The statewide cuts are hitting close to home in districts like Monroe County.
Monroe county superintendent Scott Cantrell says his school district received a point four percent budget cut.
” Point four percent for us is about $48,000.00.”
Monroe County Superintendent Scott Cantrell says That’s how much money the Monroe County School district could have to pay to cover this year’s budget.
And just to give you an idea of how much a $48,000.00 budget cut is equal to.
“$48,000.00 for us is a teacher unit, basically, about a 5-year teach with all of their insurance and fixed charges to go along with it.”
Cantrell says at this point, there’s really not much the school district can do to make up that amount.
“your contracts for all of your employees are set, most of your supplies to keep your building up and your maintenance supplies, your bus supplies, those kinds of things, all of that for the most part is already spent at this point.”
The district hopes to absorb the $48,000.00 into the budget they have now, but if not.
“We would just take the funds from the rainy day fund and cover it.”
S, if you all take money out of the rainy day fund, how much of an impact will that have.
“When you need things like you do on our campuses, as far as the physical plant issues and renovations that you’d like to make, it’s just $48,000.00 you don’t have to spend.”
