TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – Mississippi’s First District Congressman Alan Nunnelee was laid to rest today. Nunnelee passsed away at his home Friday after a battle with cancer.
The funeral service was a time to reflect on the congressman’s public service, his love for his family and his Christian faith.
More than a thousand friends, loved ones and colleagues of Congressman Alan Nunnelee filled Calvary Baptist Church for what was called a celebration of life.
Congressman Nunnelee and his family attended and served at the downtown Tupelo church.
”Alan sought his strength in Jesus Christ and he was bold in his faith, he never wavered back in high school, Alan was a solid man of character,” said longtime friend Rex Gillis.
Governor Phil Bryant was joined by other dignitaries such as US House Speaker John Boehner, both Mississippi senators and a host of congressional members and their families.
Governor Bryant remembered his friend as an encourager.
“I will certainly miss his friendship, that’s a selfish way of looking at it, the opportunities to call, talk to him and hear that encouragement again, to hear the faith he had in this great country, how much he loved this wonderful state and those beautiful grandchildren,” Gov. Bryant said.
Nunnelee’s oldest son, Reed delivered the eulogy saying his father was important, but not boastful. He shared a video clip made the evening before his dad’s brain surgery this past summer. A message to his grandkids.
“You’re special, not because of anything you will ever do in life, or anything you will ever own or accomplish, you’re special because God made you special,” Nunnelee said, on the video clip.
“That’s something every little girl and boy needs to hear,” said Reed Nunnelee.
The message was preached by Nunnelee’s uncle, who spoke of his nephew’s source of strength.
“Alan has hope because of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and that’s where our hope comes from and I looked at what cancer did to his body, then I was reminded of this beautiful truth, that death is powerless now,” said Dr. Ed Deuschle.
The congressman’s friends and family say they are thankful for a life that made a difference to so many.
