JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — Mississippi Senator Joey Fillingane is being singled out as the man who killed a bill which would help increase funding for 911 systems.
Senate bill 2577 would have reallocated the current 911 surcharge people pay on home and cell phone bills.
Currently, most of that fee goes to the phone companies, but 911 administrators argue the phone companies have already paid for their equipment upgrades and don’t need the money.
The emergency responders wanted some of the cash divided among them to buy new equipment.
The most pressing need is tracking technology to pinpoint cellphone locations immediately.
