Hosemann Doesn’t See ‘Passion’ of Four Years Ago

[bitsontherun fwkd3rwV]STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann says he’s not seeing the passion among voters this year that he did four years ago, but he’s still expecting a good turnout.

Hosemann spoke to the region’s accountants today in Starkville about changes in laws and procedures in his office. But the Nov. 6 election also was a topic.

Hosemann says his office will monitor between 50 and 100 precincts — his staff has been at about 1,000 during elections in the last four years — across the state on election day and will use texting, Twitter and Facebook as new social media options to help voters.

“I think you’ll see, like most elections, in the last two weeks people will really focus on it again. I’d like everybody to remember there are people overseas right now today being shot at so you can go to the polls. You ought to take time to go there,” Hosemann said.

He also said not having Voter ID won’t make a big difference either way.

“It’s a good chance to practice it while we work on getting Justice Department approval,” Hosemann said of the requirement which was approved last year by Mississippi voters but still is awaiting approval from the U.S. Department of Justice and finalized implementation details from the state.

About 1.2 million Mississippians voted in the presidential election four years ago.
