Dr. Mark Hersey To Speak At MUW Earth Day Celebration

COLUMBUS, Miss. – As part of its Earth Day celebration Thursday, April 21, Mississippi University for Women will host guest speaker Dr. Mark Hersey, associate professor of history at Mississippi State University.

The W’s 3rd annual Earth Day celebration will begin with a reception at 4 in the atrium of Parkinson Hall with Hersey’s presentation to follow at 5 p.m. in Nissan Auditorium.

Dr. Hersey will discuss historical and cultural views about why citizens in the Deep South are less aware of sustainability.

His lecture is titled “A Sustainable South?: History, Identity, and Conservation in the Heart of Dixie.”

Dr. Nicole Welch, who is chairing the university’s Earth Day subcommittee and is professor of biology, said, “I look forward to learning from Dr. Hersey’s talk and what we can do to educate people to bring about positive change on campus and in the Golden Triangle Region.”

Welch said The W is committed to campus sustainability and has completed several projects to lower energy consumption and create native green space on campus.

The Sustainability Committee’s website highlights these accomplishments that are available at:http://www.muw.edu/green.

“We are trying to highlight some of the projects that are taking place to move campus toward greater sustainability,” Welch said.

“It is a series of habits that lessen a person’s impact on Earth’s environment. Everyone making one small change can result in large, positive impacts.”
