NOXUBEE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)-Over crowded jail facilities are becoming more and more common.
And for Noxubee County, this is a problem they have continue to run into, but not anymore.
“Out with the old, in with the new,” said Noxubee County Sheriff Terry Grassaree.
On Saturday, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held to celebrate the grand opening of the new Noxubee County Adult Detention Center.
“The old one we had was built in 1977 so it was really passed going, so now we have a new accommodation to put the people that do break the law and it is up to state code,” said Grassaree.
“I’m glad to see it because we’ve been working on it since 06,” said board of supervisors president, William Oliver.
Oliver said ten years of hard work and a bond issue through Rural Development is what made it all happen.
“It’s a little bit more spacious but the advantage to this one right here, we can add on to it in the future,” said Oliver.
The new state of the art facility features a place to house women, a lockdown room, a lunacy room, and an upgrade in the survalliance video cameras.
“You can watch everybody 24/7, not only that, the camera is on them 24/7,” said Grassaree.
And this new facility also has a new way to handle visitation for the inmates.
“Now, when they have guest, they visit on the telephone, now they really never have to leave their cell,” Grassaree said.
Though the new facility is standing tall now, the process in completing this project, wasn’t always easy.
“The main problem we ran into was financial,” said Grassaree. “Tax rates went up, everything done went up. After every storm it goes up, and then so we had to re-bid, and when you re-bid that causes problems.”
But with that problem now solved, county leaders are excited about the finished project and the impact it will bring.
“This will be a great thing for us because we house people for other people,” said Grassaree. “Sometimes we have to hold their inmates for a period of times, so now that gives us a better job so we can do it and do it more safer and then they fell better about leaving their people in a secure and sound facility.”
Grassaree said the facility will be able to hold around 35 inmates, and he expects the new facility to be up and running by the beginning of next month.
