Miss. Supreme Court Orders Resentencing for Grenada Man Sentenced to Death
JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — A Grenada man sentenced to life without parole may get the chance to eventually go free.
The Mississippi Supreme Court today ordered Frederick Bell be re-sentenced to life in prison, but left open the chance he could apply for parole.
Bell was originally sentenced to death for the 1991 slaying of a store clerk during an armed robbery. That sentence was changed to life without parole after Bell was determined to be mentally retarded.
The U.S.Supreme Court has ruled mentally retarded inmates cannot be executed.
Bell appealed the life without parole sentence saying that was improper a view the state supreme court agrees with.
