Student Athlete of the Week: Wes Parker, Houston HS, Baseball and Football

HOUSTON, Miss. (WCBI) — Wes Parker has the Houston Hilltoppers baseball team off to a great start this season. Parker is also trying to get his team back to Pearl for another shot at a state championship opportunity. He’s been a leader on the football field and the baseball diamond as well.

Wes Parker is been a two sport athlete since his seventh grade year at Houston High School. A Wide-Receiver and Kicker on the Gridiron and a Center Fielder on the Diamond. He’s now winding down his senior year as a Hilltopper and enjoying helping his baseball team win when he’s out there on the field.

“It’s just probably team chemistry. It’s brotherhood. We all grew up playing together. We just know each other real well and that just helps us win,” said Student Athlete Wes Parker.

Parker’s teammate and future M-S-U Diamond Dawg Denver Mcquary has been one of his closest teammates on the team as he’s enjoyed being apart of it.

“I’ve played with him all my life. It’s just he’s a great player. Just somebody and he’s a great leader,” Parker said.

Mcquary has also enjoyed the journey with Parker, but he’s never seen Parker put in as much work as he does in the weight room.

“I’ve never seen somebody work as hard as he does in the weight room. He just gets after it. He wants to lift. He wants to bench. He wants to squat and he’s a really really great friend, and he’ll do anything for you,” Teammate Denver Mcquary said.

Parker is a tough kid on the football and baseball field. Both of his coaches have seen that toughness for the last few years.

“He’s really come back this year, jumped in the two hole and has really lit it up. He’s tied on the team for home-runs. His batting average is up there in the top two or three on the team and really has been a tough kid,” said Baseball Head Coach Scott Gann.

“Wes is an outstanding young man. Very trustworthy, works hard on and off the field, in the classroom. He’s a great leader and a good role model for the younger kids,” said Head Football Coach William Cook.

“The Houston Hilltoppers made their first state championship appearance last season down at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Mississippi and came up just short. Now they are taking one game at a time and looking to get back down to pearl in just a few weeks,” said WCBI’s Sports Reporter Jonathan Flippo.

“We’ve kind of had a motto just to win two more games this year. That’s kind of what we’ve been saying every game. Just to get back down and win two more games. Just to win that state championship,” Parker said.

“I felt like it was a good thing for us almost because we know what it feels like to lose it and we do not won’t that feeling again. We want to win it this year,” Mcquary said.
