JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) – State Senator Giles Ward of Louisville is now the second highest ranking member in the chamber.
Tuesday, the two term Republican was elected as the President Pro-Tempore of the Senate.
As President Pro-Tem, Ward will lead the Senate when Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves is not available and will work to round up votes on certain key issues.
He’s looking forward to the challenge and the opportunity.
“All of those members that are there are personal friends of mine, and I look forward to working with them on their issues; won’t be able to say yes on everything, but I guarantee you, I won’t have to say no on all of them either,” said the District 18 State Senator.
Ward replaces the late Senator Terry Brown, who died this fall after battling cancer.
Ward has already declared that he will not run for re-election this year.
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Mississippi senators have unanimously elected one of their Republican colleagues, Giles Ward of Louisville, as the new president pro tempore, the Senate’s second-highest leadership post.
He will preside over the Senate when Republican Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves is unavailable.
As pro tem, Ward succeeds Republican Terry Brown of Columbus, who died in September.
Ward says he will do his best to bring justice and honor to the post. He announced months ago that he will not seek a third term in the Senate this fall.
