TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – For three months now, crews have been working on a six classroom addition at Tupelo’s Early Childhood Education Center.
“Construction is going well, slightly ahead of schedule,” said Andy Cantrell, director of operations for the Tupelo Public School District.
The 2.1 million dollar project was part of the “Safe and Sound” bond package, approved by more than 85 percent of voters last April.
This addition means more room for students and teachers at the Pre Kindergarten program.
“The additional six classrooms will be able to help with our waiting list, we always have a waiting list with this Pre K program and we are excited to offer this opportunity, to get more kids in here,” Cantrell said.
The addition at ECEC should be complete by next spring.
Meantime, dirt has been moved at Tupelo Middle School, where a 7,900 square foot addition will mean five classrooms, along with room for expansion on the second floor.
“They will kind of be floater rooms, they will have art, we have sinks in there, cabinets, we have art, language, whatever the need is at the school,” said Charles Laney, with JBHM Architects.
The 1.5 million dollar addition at the middle school should be finished next fall. This summer, renovations will start at Rankin, Milam and Lawndale. There was no tax increase for the “Safe and Sound” bond package, because the new package replaced bonds that were retired.
