TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — The Mississippi Attorney General’s Office is taking steps to help consumers combat identity theft.

The Attorney General’s Office is hosting its annual “Community Shred Days” throughout the state.

On Friday, people could bring documents to the Walmart on North Gloster in Tupelo, and have personal documents and other paperwork shredded for free.

Organizers say it’s important to safeguard against identity theft.

“Things that you throw away, like your bills, after you pay them that does have your identifying information on it, and thieves will go through your trash to get your information,” said Bridgette Wiggins, of the Consumer Protection Division of the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.

Community Shred Days are being held throughout the state. For more information, go to www.agjimhood.com
