COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -Marthalie Porter is asking the Columbus Election Commission to examine the ballots in the race for Ward 5.

Porter lost to Stephen Jones in a tight race for the vacant seat.

Affidavit ballots were counted and confirmed Wednesday. Jones received 9 votes, Porter, 4. The total vote tally stands at 451 votes for Jones. Porter came up short with 445 votes.

Now the former candidate is asking the ballot boxes and the ballots be examined March 14th, but that won’t change the results of the vote.

“The election is still final. Mr. Jones will still be sworn in as a councilman, so none of that changes…But now the candidates can come in and examine the ballots, and see what they want to determine.”

Jones, the declared winner, will be sworn into to office Tuesday.

If Porter finds what she believes to be discrepancies, she will have the option of pursuing the matter through the courts.
