WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) – Staying in shape can be challenging at any age but after having major back surgery, one 82 year-old West Point resident is inspiring many at the local Wellness Center.

Mary Ann Robinson has always been active but in 2013 back issues threatened her independence.

“I began falling where I couldn’t stand up. Long story short, MRI showed that I had spine problem. I had inflammation up and down my spine. I had osteoporosis, arthritis of the spine,” says Robinson.

After having back surgery, eighty-two year old Robinson started physical therapy. Soon after, she decided to also use her membership at the Wellness Center in West Point.

“I was on a walker when I started coming here. I started out very slowly and Tracy and Liz from the nursing home got together and put together a program for me to start on. I’ve just progressed from there,” says Robinson.

When Robinson first began her exercise program at the Wellness Center, she could barely walk. Now she works out six days a week, using weight equipment and walking up to 18 laps around the indoor track.

“You won’t find a person that works harder than Ms. Robinson. She comes in on a daily and she stays here sometimes an hour or two hours. If she’s here she may go over there and rest a little while but she’s going to be working,” says James Daniels, a Counselor at the West Point Wellness Center.

Robinson says the exercise program improved her health but it also taught her that anything is possible if you’re willing to try.
