Video: Elementary Students Learn Lessons Through Song

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Students at Milam Elementary in Tupelo learned tips on songwriting.

Teaching Artist Richelle Putnam showed students how to think of a topic, such as bullying.

Students were then encouraged to list various traits of bullying, and find words that rhymed.

Teachers also sat in on the sessions, so they can incorporate the ideas into their classroom lessons.

“I believe Richelle is talking about how they’re pulling vocabulary words and then using those vocabulary words within, context, even rhyming, metaphors, similes, there’s a lot of language skills and content skills they can get from this.”

The event was funded through the Whole Schools Initiative.
