GRENADA, Miss. (WCBI) – A slain Mississippi officer is laid to rest.
Agent Lee Tartt was killed in the line of duty this weekend during a Tishomingo County stand-off.
On Tuesday, his life was celebrated.
Hundreds of law enforcement officers filled Emmanuel Baptist Church in Grenada, as they paid their final respects to their fallen brother.
“In uniform, out of uniform, he was just Lee,” said Thomas Stone, who was friends with Tartt.
Tartt was a law enforcement veteran of more than 20 years.
He served as a Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics Agent and on a tactile team.
“Lee was really a great guy, a lot of fun. Didn’t matter where you saw him, he knew you, shake your hand, laugh, talk with you,” added Stone.
Shannon Gibson previously worked alongside Tartt in MBN.
“One of the most genuine, honest people I’ve ever met,” said Gibson, who now works with the Pelahatchie Police Dept.
Gibson says one of the most important things about Tartt was his strong faith.
“He’d talk to you in the drop of a hat about God, he was just kind and open and excessively humble,” said Gibson.
Tartt leaves behind a wife and two kids.
Friends say he loved his family.
“He was excessively proud of his family, he was very protective of his family. They meant a lot to him, very good family man, very good Christian man,” said Gibson.
Those who knew Tartt say he will leave a lasting legacy behind.
“He’s something these young agents will strive to be, if you’re looking for a goal in you’re career, there is your goal,” added Gibson.
Governor Phil Bryant and Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann were also in attendance.
Three other MHP troopers were also injured in that same stand-off.
During the ceremony, they sent short video messages to Tartt’s family speaking of how much he meant to them.
