TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – At this event, it’s all about honoring those who help shape the lives of young people.
‘It’s a chance for us to thank the community for the support they give us year after year, said Zell Long, who is chief professional officer for the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Mississippi. She says the annual “Champions for Youth” breakfast also lets Tupelo High School seniors take a bow for including club members in their required 12th grade projects.
Lee Holman is a senior at THS, and last year, his group created a video news segment, using clubbers as reporters and anchors.
Holman and his team members were given medals during the “Champions for Youth” breakfast. He says it was a blessing to work with the youngsters.
“I think we were really able to give the kids many life skills such as confidence, and leadership and also being able to communicate with others,” Holman said.
Julia Cobb spends two afternoons every week tutoring club members during homework hour. Cobb was surprised when she was named volunteer of the year.
“I was just overwhelmed by it all, and then, it’s like, I can’t stand to miss now, it’s such a positive experience, the kids are great,” Cobb said.
And club members say they are fortunate to be part of such a great organization.
“I like the fact that we get to communicate with others and get to meet new people, help people with homework or get help for ourselves,” said Victoria Liggins.
“I love that I have a place to go and just fellowship with friends and a place just to get away from home,” said Kyion White.
“It’s a good environment and they have a really positive attitude, so it’s really good for kids,” said Heaven Hamilton.
The Haven Acres Club hosted the breakfast. It is one of five clubs in a four county area.
And the Boys and Girls Clubs can always use more volunteers. For information on how to help out, call 662 841 6504.
