WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) — Long-time West Point Fire Chief Johnny Littlefield died at about 4:30 a.m. today. He was 61.

Littlefield had been battling health issues for several months and had announced in May that he planned to retire at the end of this year.

He joined the West Point Fire Department on Feb. 12, 1976 and worked his way through the ranks until being named chief on May 10, 2001.

“Firefighting was his life,” Mayor Robbie Robinson said.

Littlefield had been off work using extended vacation time and the department’s three battalion chiefs were managing the department. A search for a new permanent chief was expected to begin early next year after Littlefield’s formal retirement.

In addition to fire chief, he also had served as Clay County’s emergency management director.

He also was actively involved in the community, organizing an annual rodeo that raised thousands of dollars first for the Mississippi Burn Center before it was closed and then for the Junior Auxiliary.

Robinson Funeral Home in West Point is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial Service will be Friday November 14, 2014 at 11 AM at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Butler and Dr. James Towery officiating. Visitation will be at 10 AM Friday at Calvary Baptist Church.

He is survived by his daughters, Christy Symon (Daniel) of Jackson, Jessi Flynt (Allen) of West Point; son, Jake Littlefield (Kyleen) of Devine, TX; his mother, Faye Littlefield of West Point; brothers, Jimmy Littlefield (Judy) of West Point, Billy Joe Littlefield (Debra) of Canton, MS; sister, Sue Ann Ladner (Gari) of Poplarville, MS, Liz Morgan (Jimmy) of West Point; 6 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Winston Johnny Littlefield.

Memorials may be made to MS Burn Foundation 161 Pine Ridge Circle Brandon, MS 39047.
