FAYETTE COUNTY, Ala. (WCBI) — Write-in candidates rarely win elections, but one Alabama sheriff has defied those odds.
Two-term Fayette County Sheriff Rodney Inglelost the democratic primary in June but that didn’t stop him from pushing for his re-election.
After hearing the voices of the Fayette County citizens, Ingle began his write-in campaign. He will now enter his third term.
“I knew if we worked hard, we would have a good outcome,” Ingle said.
That determination pulled Ingle through his disappointing loss in the primary. The hope of another chance only came after hearing from the people he had served for the last eight years.
“In November, it’s the peoples race, and the people got behind me and told me they would support me, and I told them that’s something I wanted to do,” Ingle said.
With that support, Ingle defeated the two other party candidates and a second write-in candidate on the ballot. Political Analyst Marty Wiseman says this outcome for a write-in campaign is rare.
“You have to get them to go the second mile in order to write it in, then you got little things, like you gotta tell them how to spell your name and make sure you get that done. It’s a tough, tough proposition to get it done under the best circumstances,” Wiseman said.
Ingle overcame the odds.
Now, he can continue to protect and serve the people who supported him.
Ingle says he does plan to make some changes in his third term, and also continue making Fayette County a safe place to live.
