Video: Mississippi Rural Water Association Files Suit Against the State

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) – The Mississippi Rural Water Association files a lawsuit against the Public Service Commission over a new rule that would postpone utility deposits for certified domestic violence victims. The waiver was approved last month and allows victims sixty days to come up with the deposit money.

In the lawsuit, the water association claims the PSC has no jurisdiction to regulate rates or the collection process. Commissioner Brandon Presley, who pushed for the new rules, is listed in the lawsuit.

“I think it’s a shame and disgrace that Mississippi Rural Water Association would sue the Public Service Commission, me and my colleagues to try and stop a rule aimed at trying to help domestic violence victims.It’s particularly egregious and awful that they would file it on the last day of domestic violence awareness month, which is today.”

The plan was designed after similar measures in Louisiana and Texas.
