VERNON, Ala. (WCBI) – The city of Vernon is celebrating a new business and more jobs. Dozens of people came out to a ribbon cutting ceremony for K & S Lumber in Vernon, Alabama this afternoon. Alabama Governor Robert Bentley was also there.
Vernon is now the new headquarters for K & S Lumber. The wood mill is the first of its kind in Lamar County.
“We strategically placed this mill so that it would be centrally located to the hardwood timber that’s in the area. There’s not another mill like this close by which gives us a strategic advantage,” says Operations Manager Mike Woods.
Industry officials say the wood mill creates jobs and gives locals a better opportunity to sell their wood products.
“They’re cutting raw, green timber, lumber and cross sides. They will probably put a dry kill in later and it’ll dry the wood products which will bring a better price,” says Larry Huggins, a member of the Vernon Industrial Board.
Alabama Governor Robert Bentley says bringing new business like K & S Lumber to rural Alabama keeps communities thriving.
“They are already expanding. They’ve been in business just a few months. Ten jobs, twenty jobs, to an area like Vernon is just as important as a 1000 jobs to Huntsville,” ,” says Alabama Governor Robert Bentley.
K & S Lumber has already created nearly a dozen jobs. K & S Lumber is the first company located in Vernon’s newly built Industrial Park.
