[syndicaster id=’6215865′] New Albany, Miss. (WCBI Sports)– Ingomar High School is known for basketball with a combined of twelve overall state championships. The girls have seven overall state titles and the boys have five overall state titles. The Ingomar girls and boys basketball teams both made it to Jackson last season and fail in the state semifinals, but the school moved up classifications from 1-A to 2-A and both teams fill they can get back to Jackson this season.
The Ingomar girls basketball team have every one back from last season’s team with no seniors for the second straight season. Last season the girls won their first game in the state tournament in Jackson, but fail in the semi-finals to Pelahatchie in the second game. Now the team has 20 plus wins on the season being in the Class 2-A Division and they feel they can get back and make a deeper run in the postseason.
“It’s going to be a lot tougher than it was last year. We will have to go through a lot of tough teams to get through, but I think if our guards produce and we play consistent as a whole I think we can get back,” said Freshman Point Guard Gara Beth Self.
“As long as we play that I know we can play and stay at that consistent level then I think big things can happen,” said Freshman Forward Lauren Thompson.
“The key to it now especially with the bracket format is winning our Division Tournament. If we can play well and figure out a way to do that then I think we set ourselves up to get there again,” said Head Girls Coach Trent Adair.
The girls team are not the only ones having a successful season, but the boys basketball team are right in the mix as well led by two seniors Cade Hall and Brooks Rhea. This team also made it to Jackson last season winning their first game, but falling to Coffeeville in the semi-finals. The team also has 20 plus wins on the season and they have been kind of viewed as underdogs on the season since being in the 2-A Division now.
“We kind of left with a bad taste in our mouth last year so if we can get back down there this year I think if we do the things we need to do we can get a little bit more successful,” said Senior Point Guard Cade Hall.
“We didn’t expect it last year either, but you know worked hard and went down there and we didn’t come out how we wanted it too, but we hope we can get back there this year,” said Senior Post Player Brooks Rhea.
“Everyone of them here is special and each time that you get a chance to go down there and play in Jackson it’s a big event and I don’t think this one will be any different if we get that opportunity to go back down there and play again,” said Head Boys Coach Jonathan Ashley.
Ingomar returns to action Friday at home against Pontotoc.
