Video: Top Students Compete In Tech Event At NEMCC

BOONEVILLE, MISS. (WCBI) – Hours of hard work and meticulous design comes down to a few seconds for this team from West Point High School.

Jaide Jones and her classmates entered their balsa wood bridge in the structural engineering competition.

“It did better than what I thought it would do, we had some difficulties while making it,” Jones said.

It’s part of the Northern District Technology Student Association Conference. More than 400 students from 20 schools are taking part.

“Students use their concepts and what they learn in the classroom and they apply them here,” said Jody Presley of NEMCC.

There are a number of categories, such as career prep, fashion design and photographic technology. One of the most popular events, is flight endurance.

Whichever event they are part of, students say the TSA competition helps in many ways.

“They actually help in real life materials, the speeches, it helps me write my essays for my scholarships this year,” said Stephon Calhoune, a senior at WPHS.

“TSA has like been a huge part of my life, I used to be really shy, I wouldn’t talk to anybody, I started coming here and meeting people and mean it’s amazing people,” said Jessica Simmerman, a senior at South Panola High School.

Judges critique each student and those who win here advance to state.

The state meet is in March. Nationals are in Nashville this spring.
