Pontotoc, Mississippi (WCBI) – Howard Stafford Park in Pontotoc became a hands on science lab Thursday.
The 4-H Science, Engineering and Technology Day is funded by Toyota. It allowed students perform various science experiments and water conservation education activities.
“I hope they’re able to take some of these experiments home and are able to actually bring back to the classroom also and be able to apply them to some of the standards that we’re learning in science,” explained third grade teacher Johnna Flake.
Students rotate through stations, each with a different experiment. At this station, students learn about the harmful effects of UV rays.
There is also a petting zoo and firemen are on hand to talk about ways to stay safe in case of an emergency.
This outdoor classroom gives older 4-H participants an opportunity to share their love of science and learning with youngsters. Each station is manned by either high school or college students.
“I love helping kids and helping them feel like they’re learning and teaching them some of what I know,” said high school student Dixie Priest.
“It really gives me an opportunity to connect with the kids and let me help them learn about science,” explained 4-H participant Caleb Hall.
Students say they learn a lot with this fun break from the traditional classroom.
“If you stay in the water too long, you will get sunburned,” said third grader Brianna Crowley.
Organizers say Toyota’s investment is having a definite and measurable impact, as students see that science is relevant in their everyday lives.
