JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) – Lawmakers will also consider totally revamping the state’s election laws.
Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann and a group of 37 other Mississippians helped develop the legislation.
It includes online registration for voting, changing voting precincts, new campaign finance laws and penalties, and a 21 day period to cast your vote before election day.
Hosemann also says the new laws will make it easier for the younger generation to be involved in the voting process.
“They’re now electronically motivated, this is the way they do things, they register online for so many things anymore. Now they’ll register online to vote, we want people to come cast their ballot. I can hardly get people 18-25 to come to the polls; we want to make it easier for them to register, easier for them to change their precinct. Say, they move to Columbus or wherever, they can go down and do that online and go and cast their ballot..”
The new laws would be the first change in the Mississippi election laws in more than a century.
