Video: Sheriff: Lee County Deputy Shot Armed Suspect

Tupelo, Mississippi (WCBI) – A Lee County deputy injures an armed suspect.
Sheriff Jim Johnson says Tupelo police attempted to pull a white car over about 2:30 P.M. Tuesday in the Tulip Creek area of east Tupelo.
The vehicle crashed near County Road 1282 and the two suspects fled. The passenger was captured but the driver ran into the woods.
Johnson says between 4 and 5 P.M. a veteran Lee County Sheriff’s deputy saw the unidentified armed suspect in a wooded are near County Road 1282, about a mile and a half from the Lee County Landfill, and shot him.
“The individual was in a squatted position near a tree, immediately jumped up turned and faced the deputy displaying a handgun pointing it at the deputy. And before the suspect could fire, the deputy did fire and strike the suspect,” said Johnson.
The suspected driver is being treated at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
Johnson did not release how many times the 52 year-old suspect was hit, his name, or condition at Tuesday night press conference.
Johnson said investigators will meet with the District Attorney’s office on Wednesday to determine the charges the suspect will face.
