COLUMBUS, Miss.(WCBI)- The reports of shootings in Columbus have left many in different communities concerned for their safety.
Residents we spoke to were afraid to go on camera for fear of retaliation, but some told us fear of being shot while inside their homes is now a reality.
Some homeowners said their neighbors aren’t the criminals. It’s outsiders bringing in drugs and gun violence.
According to Willie McCord, Minister of 10th Avenue Church of Christ, it hasn’t always been that way.
McCord says it’s fear that causes the crime to continue.
“Somewhere we have to find the courage and fortitude,” McCord explained. “We are at a point where we don’t say anything or do anything, and that’s not going to resolve the issue.”
Interim Police Chief Fred Shelton tells WCBI, people hear about shootings more often because of social media, and there hasn’t been a large increase in crime.
Shelton also says residents are reporting what they see more often, which helps police.
