Video: Houston Gets Some Clarification from Ethics Commission on Hiring City Clerk

HOUSTON, Miss. (WCBI) – While it doesn’t fully clear the water, a state Ethics Commission opinion may sway votes to fill a key city position in the town of Houston. Since July, aldermen have been split over naming a city clerk after Jamie Dendy stepped down.  39 people applied for the position but a leading candidate is Barbara Buggs, long-time deputy clerk and the sister of Ward 2 alderwoman Shenia Jones.  An 11-year-old Attorney general’s opinion suggests aldermen could run afoul of state law if they name Buggs.  But last week, the Ethics Commission said that since Buggs is an independent adult, the city would be fine if Jones doesn’t vote on Buggs’ promotion, benefits or budget.  Aldermen could decide next week how to proceed.
