COLUMBUS, Miss.(WCBI)–A search for a new athletics director has begun as a first step for the return of intercollegiate athletics on the campus of Mississippi University For Women in Columbus. The good news was announced this morning during university convocation at The W.
Places on The W campus like the Pohl Building are expected to be filled to capacity often now that sports is on it’s way back to the university. When sports was discontinued after the 2002 tornado, former basketball coach Glenn Schmidt enjoyed what she was doing at the time.
“It was great for me, I mean having a great time. You know we had the four sports. We were playing division two NCAA in the Gulf South Conference. And I thought things were going well,” said Glenn Schmidt/Former W Basketball Coach.
“Because we use to all get together and have an annual alumni game. And we would play the current team and that was our reunion. That was our homecoming,” said Joni House/Former Softball Player.
A consultant has been hired by The W to begin the search for a qualified athletics director for both men’s and women’ sports.
“But we know that we need someone on the ground with the right expertise to set into place the next steps and the time table,” said Dr. Jim Borsig/MUW President.
“You know there are so many youngsters out there that can play college sports that don’t get to. And I thought what a great thing to bring it back,” said Glenn Schmidt.
The potential return of sports is being well received by leaders faculty and alums of the university.
“And then you’ve got soccer and volleyball and sports, the minor sports that are so big. I think it will be very attractive for the university,” said Glenn Schmidt.
“Community support I think is going to be there for us. And it will be good for school spirit it will be good for our students. And I think it’ll be good for the university,” said Jim Borsig.
