Firestorm Brewing Over Councilmans Comments
(JACKSON,MS) WCBI – Criticism continues to mount after Jackson City Council member Kenneth Stokes said black leaders and residents should attack officers from neighboring towns chases suspects into Jackson . “What I suggest is we get the black leadership together, and as these jurisdictions come into Jackson we throw rocks and bricks and bottles at them,” is the statement Stokes made on New Year’s Eve.
Stokes says those chases endanger children in the streets of Jackson and come after officers from Flowood and Pearl pursued a misdemeanor suspect into a Jackson neighborhood. Opposition to the remarks is now swelling statewide . Calhoun County Sheriff Greg Pollan took to Twitter to say his department will no longer do business with any Jackson business until Stokes is no longer a council member.
Governor Phil Bryant is also taking exception to Stokes comment calling it ” reprehensible” . Bryant is asking Attorney General Jim Hood to see if Stokes could face criminal charges for threats against police officers.
