COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — First responders are the ones keeping our citizens safe no matter what the cost. And now, some Columbus Police and firefighters are going beyond the call of duty by helping one resident get back on her feet.
Back on June 26th, firefighters and other first responders came to Dorothy Hubbard’s home where it was up in flames.
“It was really a thing that I didn’t expect and it was just there and I just cooked the Lord I said Lord what is this?” says Dorothy Hubbard.
Sadly, Dorothy lost everything.
But Columbus firefighters and police officers wanted to do something to help.
They organized a car wash to help raise funds for Mrs. Hubbard after the tragic event.
Officer Rhonda Sanders with the Columbus Police Department said it’s a way for first responders to go beyond the call of duty.
“When all the blue lights are off…all the red lights are off, Mrs. Hubbard still had a loss. We wanted to actually get in there and help Mrs. Hubbard get her feet back on the ground and make a new start,” says Officer Rhonda Sanders.
Hubbard says she is humbled that those who saved her life that day, continue to be with her through this difficult time.
“Surprised and it’s just a beautiful thing through the Lord that people think about you,” says Hubbard.
Even small helpers got their hands soapy for a good cause.
“Washing trucks and cars because I wanted to help someone,” says Brooklyn Sanders.
After all she has been through, Hubbard is thankful to be a part of the Columbus community.
“I thank everyone for everything that they have done. Small…large whatever. I thank them,” says Hubbard.
